I went to school here in the late 90s until April/May 2000. I had to move to the United States because of my dad in the military. Once I got to the United States I started school in August 2000. It felt weird being that long out of school. One because of the move, and two being the United States have longer summer breaks than in the United Kingdom schools (year round, only a month off for summer break).

Schooling years and such are different United States vs United Kingdom. It took some adjusting time from the move. I'm going to post some information below about the differences and in future post blogs as well.

The UK school system is compulsory from ages 5 to 18. It is divided into Primary education (ages 4–11), Secondary education (ages 11–16), and Post-16 education (Sixth Form/College). Students take standardized GCSE exams at age 16 before optionally specializing in A-levels for university preparation. [1, 2, 3]

Key Differences in the System 

• State vs. Independent Schools: Around 93% of British students attend state-funded schools, which are free to attend. Independent schools (including prestigious "public schools" like Eton) charge tuition. 

• Early Specialization: Unlike the broad education continuing through US high school, UK students take GCSE exams in Year 11. After this, they choose only 3 or 4 subjects to study in Sixth Form to prepare for university. [1, 2, 3]
